When you are using stage directions, you are looking from the actors perspective (the actor looking at the audience).

Miss Hurst showed us that this was important so that we did not just stay in the same place when we were performing and also, so that we knew not to perform with out backs to the audience but with our faces to the audience, so that we could have a better performance.
